World Cup 2026 Groups & Group Draw

World Cup 2026 Groups

For the first time in World Cup history, the group stage features 12 groups of 4 teams each. This new format creates more matches, more drama, and more opportunities for upsets.

The New Group Format

The 2026 World Cup group stage is significantly different from previous tournaments. Instead of 8 groups, there are now 12. Each group still contains 4 teams, and each team plays 3 group matches. However, the qualification pathway has changed: the top 2 teams from each group qualify automatically (24 teams), plus the 8 best third-placed teams, creating a 32-team knockout bracket.

This means that finishing third in your group doesn't necessarily mean elimination. A strong third-place finish — one with a good goal difference or a strong points tally — can still earn a knockout-stage berth. This changes the dynamic of the final group match significantly.

The Group Draw

The official group draw assigns all 48 teams to 12 groups based on world ranking and confederation rules. The three host nations (USA, Canada, Mexico) are seeded into different groups to spread the host-nation advantage.

What Groups Mean for Your Predictions

The group stage is where prediction games get interesting. Favourites usually progress, but the group stage always produces surprises. Watch for these patterns:

  • Groups with multiple strong teams ('groups of death') produce the most upsets and the hardest predictions
  • Third-place teams playing for survival create unpredictable final match days
  • Host nation groups tend to have electric atmospheres that boost the home team's chances
  • The opening match of the tournament is historically kind to the host nation
